The Finnish-American Who Helped Decide American Independence

September 13 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT

Dear Friends,

Did you know that a man of Finnish descent played a pivotal role in the decision for American independence?

Join Finlandia Foundation Boston for a fascinating afternoon with Jay Smith, Finlandia Foundation National’s 2026 Lecturer of the Year, as he brings to life the remarkable story of John Morton — signer of the Declaration of Independence and a descendant of Finnish settlers in colonial New Sweden. Morton’s story is one of the lesser-known chapters of Finnish-American history. His political career culminated at a defining moment in 1776, and his support helped Pennsylvania move toward independence. Jay Smith’s engaging presentation will explore Morton’s life, his Finnish ancestral roots, and his enduring place in the story of the founding of the United States.  As America celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, there could hardly be a better time to rediscover this fascinating connection between Finland and the birth of the United States.
